19/06/03 - Broadband South Bank is an initiative ran by Yorkshire Forward in conjunction with Business Link Humber, BT and other service providers. The aim of the project is to bring broadband to all parts of Humberside where there is proven demand, and assist local businesses to make the most of it.

The BT exchanges in Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Barton on Humber will have ADSL available from August 2003. Which will benefit 39,000 homes and 4,000 businesses.

The initiative goes a lot further for business users subscribing through the scheme, they could benefit from up to£300 towards a year's service costs. Additionally there is £200,000 of European funding to be used to inform potential broadband users in the North and North East areas of Lincolnshire of the benefits, and provide post install training/support. Of interest to other areas of the UK looking into schemes like this, analyse of the business benefits is planned for the end of the first year of the scheme.

If you are a business in the area then contact Business Link Humber on 0845 124333 for further information.

07/06/03 - EXTENDING THE REACH OF ADSL
(BT News Release NR0311, 27 March 2003)
BT Wholesale is testing the provision of ADSL broadband services over slightly greater distances from the exchange than at present. The distance restriction on 512 k bit/s ADSL coverage comes about because of the reduction in the strength of the signal carried due to electrical resistance in the cables. BT's research has now shown that a good quality service can still be provided when relaxing the limits on this loss in signal strength from 55dB to 60dB. This is roughly equivalent to extending the reach of broadband from 5.5km from an exchange to about 6km, bringing two thirds of those customers (about 600,000 households) currently out of reach into the coverage area. This will mean more than 97 per cent of those connected to ADSL enabled exchanges will be within reach. The proposed launch will be in June, subject to final trials.

This has now come online and should be a huge benefit to outreach places like Laceby, try your phone number in the online checker here to see if you are now eligible.
